Red Flags
In children and teenagers
Red Flags is born from an experience its author, Jared Jazmín Martínez López, carried in silence for more than two decades. At the age of eight, she was sexually abused, and her parents did not find out until she was 33. What prevented her from asking for help in time was not only fear, but also the way the adults around her responded—or failed to respond—to the signs she was giving without realizing it.
From this intimate and painful place, and drawing on her daily work with children and adolescents, the author has created a practical guide for parents and caregivers: learning to open their eyes and recognize those red flags—the behavioral changes children display when something serious is happening in their lives and they cannot find the words to say it.
This book is neither a clinical manual nor a catalog of diagnoses. It is the testimony of someone who experienced firsthand what it means not to be seen in time, and who now offers concrete tools for communication, observation, and connection, so that other parents can do what hers could not: reach their children before it is too late.
